Attached is a press cutting from "The Liverpool University Research Intelligence Magazine " (Sept 99). It describes the ongoing research at the Centre for Intelligent Monitoring Systems.
Imagine you are responsible for the smooth running of an unmanned industrial Plant located in a remote and hostile environment - primeval jungle, perhaps, or arctic conditions. You organise a regular maintenance programme to try to keep the plant functioning as it should, so your engineers have to make the arduous journey to the plant whether or not remedial work is actually needed. Periodically, the plant malfunctions, despite the maintenance programme. The engineers make an extra journey to the plant, anly to discover they haven't correctly identified the equipment the equipment or components required.
