| Liverpool M.P. Louise Ellman will today (Thursday 23 September at 2 p.m.) 'switch on' the University of Liverpool Centre for Intelligent Monitoring Systems (CIMS) Demonstrator Rig, a project which has been brought forward through partnership between Shell, BNFL, the local company Heaps & Partners Ltd, and CIMS itself. Uses will include safety in aeroplanes and nuclear systems.
The ceremony will take place in the University of Liverpool's Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics, Brownlow Hill. It will involve the formal activation of the CIMS rig, which will help monitor fluid flows in pipes without opening up the machinery. Speaking before the ceremony, Mrs Ellman said:
"This is an excellent example of University expertise creating industrially useful techniques. I congratulate the Centre for Intelligent Monitoring Systems and its partners on this impressive development.
The Demonstrator Rig is probably a first for technological transfer between academic and business interests at the initial Research and Development stages. It offers an innovative model for technological transfer at an early stage in development, and will act as a magnet and catalyst for other companies also to come on board this exciting project.
I am delighted to see such close and constructive collaboration between the University and industrial partners."
The applications of the CIMS Demonstrator Rig are potentially very wide, and include checks on closed instrumentation and machines to ensure aeroplane and nuclear safety.
